History, Math and Art Oh My

We often start our day looking at this adorable book. I found it recommended on the homeschool blog Happiness is Here (one of my all time favorite homeschool/unschool blogs). For each day of the year it gives ideas on how to celebrate the day. This morning Miss 9 decided to look ahead and found a page about making a scrapbook.

Luckily, just a few days ago I had grabbed some old magazines that were free at the local library. So, after some disputes and practice with conflict resolution and compromise ;-) they decided who got what magazines and got started making scrapbooks.

When they do crafts at the table I usually grab a book to read to them at the same time. I've felt like we haven't done much math lately so I grabbed these two from the shelf. I read a little from each.

This got Miss 9 in the mood to pull out the white boards. There is something magical about white boards to kids! Anything I put on there they get excited about - yay! So, I picked some problems off the top of my head. Not shown here is we talked about the square root of numbers and squared numbers as they were mentioned in the books I read at the table.

Miss 12 wasn't interested in any more math so she pulled out her watercolors to make a new picture to hang on our art wall. Another great thing to always have around for your artists are cheap frames. I get them at Ikea or the dollar store. Both my girls LOVE to put their artwork in frames and hang them up all over the house :)

I pulled out our fractions game for Miss 9. It's called the Fractions Formula Game. She practiced adding fractions with the fun manipulatives.

Then, as it's the beginning of Black History Month I asked it they wanted to watch a video with me to learn a bit more about it. We found some great videos on you tube and pulled up a couple episodes of Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum. We watched one on Maya Angelou and Frederick Douglass. We talked a bit more about them before moving on to their 'screen time' for the day. This is when they relax some and I get things done too :). It's a beautiful sunny day today so we will go out for some yard work after screen time. Hope your day was as good as ours <3!
