Shakespeare in the Yard

One of the most important parts of our unschooling journey has been community. We moved to our town a few years ago and didn't know anyone. We met up with a few different groups that I heard about through word of mouth or on social media but we couldn't find our tribe. I finally decided to put myself out there and put a call out on a local homeschoolers Facebook group. I described who we were and what kind of group we were hoping to form. And they came! Our tribe game. We have made the most wonderful life long friends and the best little homeschool community I could have imagined. Never be afraid to put yourself out there!

We meet every week for play time in a forest and then we also get together for any and all social events or projects anyone can come up with. Recently, the kids decided they wanted to put on a Shakespeare play. With some help, the kids broke down the parts of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

The younger kiddos took time out to do some crafts while the older ones did some set design and went over their lines. The kids were so excited about doing this project together and they were able to learn so much about how a theatre production works.

By the end of 2 days of practice they put on the full play with fun homemade costumes and a lot of pride in their faces. All of the kids decided that they want to put on the play again with a larger audience and with all of the lines memorized. I also heard rumblings of ideas for other plays that they would write and direct themselves. It was such a wonderful experience for everyone involved -highly recommend for any homeschool group!
